As we’re breaking our heads over the Empire: Migrants edit, we want you to enjoy this wonderfully strange photo from our neighbors at the Tervuren archives. The photo was taken around the turn of the 20th century, in what was then the Belgian Congo.
While it paints a picture of the awkwardness of life in the colonies, the photo is also telling the viewer something about the act of portraiture—a theme that’s investigated in Empire: Migrants. Coincidence or not, it’s a great photo.
